AAAEA's First Camping Trip

Over the years, AAAEA has been introducing new activities and improving existing ones to keep our members interested and involved.
On Friday 8/1/08 to Sunday 8/3/08, AAAEA held its first ever camping trip in Wisconsin, near the border.  About 50 people joined this activity over the three day period, and about 10 sites were reserved.
Children and adults, members and their spouses enjoyed the nature, swimming, campfires, card playing, argeeleh, music, volleyball, miniature golf, tricycle riding, jumping jack, chess games, and the great food.
On the menu was shish kabob, kefta kabob, hummus, chicken kabob, bagels and cream cheese, cereal, cheese omelets, veg. omelets, and hot dogs among other things.  Arabic coffee and tea were always available.
Based on a few conversations with our members who attended and our member to be (new potential member who joined the camp), the event was (great).
To our colleagues in Wisconsin who also joined the camp, and who contributed in significant ways to the success of the event (they are experienced campers), thank you.

Picnic II:

AAAE Banner

AAAEA held its second annual picnic.  We visited Ty Werner park in Westmont, IL.  The place was great because of water games, clean places, indoor washrooms, great grill places, wonderful weather, and a great staff attended to our needs.  The picnic was held in partnership with the Arab Medical Association, Arab Bar Association, and Arab Fest.  About 300 people attended.  Arab Bar Association said, "The picnic was terrific; the park is beautiful; the food was great and the turnout was amazing. A good time was had by all. Congratulations on a well executed event and thank you for including us in it. We really enjoyed it and look forward to future events."   Dr. Ahmmad Hammad said, "I just want to thank you and all those who contributed to this very successful event.  It was well organized and everyone I talked to had a very good time.  May I recommend holding the picnics at this location in the future and invite other associations to join.  The place is central and is A+."   Mohammad Dasoqi said, "We need to protect our rights at this place.. we found a cheap, great and an awesome park in my new adopted town .. What impressed me the most was the attentive personal from the Village of Westmont PARK district who were absolutely "Great and very pleasant to all" . I spoke to them while there, and  they were actually happy to help us.."   Wafa Goba said, "Very successful picnic.  Great work."  Raed Milhem said, "It was a GREAT day, I had a great time with everyone. It was wonderful to see you all, great job."

Activity Committee Update:
There is something remarkable and unique about the activity committee. For one thing, it is about members and their family coming together and connecting with each other while enjoying an outdoor and/or indoor activity. It is about providing and promoting opportunities for members to escape from the pressure of their daily routine, gain relaxation, and strengthen social interaction among our Arab community.

In 2008, the activity committee has organized three picnics, a golf outing, and a camping trip, in addition to our semiannual meeting scheduled for the 17th, October, 2008 (please visit AAAEA website for more details).  Marching into 2009, the committee has planned to organize four picnics, two camping trips, two golf outings, and our annual dinner (Hafalh) at the Carlisle in Lombard in March 21, 2009.

In the meantime, the activity committee would like to thank all members who contributed time and effort to the success and planning of our activities during 2008 and moving forward into 2009.  Please send your comments and suggestions to AAAEA@AAAAEA.org.

Humor
An artist, sick of working at Mickey D's for what had seemed an eternity decided to get a job working as a laborer at a construction site. Being a usual overconfident artist, he soon began to brag to the other workers about all sorts of things. One day he decided to brag that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of the wiry engineer on the site. After several minutes, the engineer had had enough.
"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is," said the engineer. "I will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you won't be able to wheel back."
"You're on, little guy!" he replied. "Let's see what you got."
The engineer reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to the young man, he said, "All right: Get in."

BOARD MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues It has been an exciting and busy quarter since the board was elected. The summer was beautiful, and our events were attractive and satisfactory to members. In addition to the events all of you know about, the board is working on a new web site, renew membership(please renew yours),and created an accurate up to date members list. Our activities were successful, the first golf outing was agreat one,the second was canceled due to the lack of interest and busy with back to the school events. In addition our fist picnic was wet,but mother nature made the weather the best it can for our second picnic.Members expressed their satisfaction with the second picnic(place,facilities,clean,...),the board reserved all 4 picnics for next year at the same place as the second picnic(Ty Warner Park). Then the board introduced the camping for the first time ever, and what a great time we had.About 50 people joined, and we think next year"s camping may double. Our chapter in Peoria held its picnic last month and Our President Hasan Algholeh, and founding President Bilal Almasri joined our colleagues in Peoria. Looking ahead,we have the last picnic this weekend, and then we need to start the seminars and get ready for the Semi Annual Meeting,in addition to host the third National Conference. Last but not lease, our outreach committee is meeting this weekend with engineers in LA,San Diego, and Las Vegas in these cities to share with them the Chicago Experience Power Point Presentation. If you know any engineer in these areas, please refer them to the information about these meetings on the web site http://www.aaaea.org/Events/2008/AAAEAGoingWest.pdf

INTERVIEW With Dr. Mustafa Alsaleh

  1-Who is Dr. Mustafa Alsaleh?
Mustafa Alsaleh is a Jordanian who was born and raised in a small town in the northern part of Jordan "Alsareih". He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees in Geotechnical Engineering form the Jordan University of Science and Technology, worked in Amman for a year and half then moved to Abu Dhabi in 1999; after working there for a year, he moved to Akron, OH to start his PhD studies in 2000. Mustafa decided to move to Louisiana State University in 2001 where he got his PhD in Geomechanics in summer 2004. He joined Caterpillar Inc. right after graduation to lead the development of soil numerical modeling using DEM, FEA, etc. He had served in several graduate students committees in the state of Illinois and Wisconsin; he also published over 25 journal and peer reviewed conference papers in the field of deep foundations, strain localization, soil-machine interaction etc. Mustafa has organized multiple international conferences and edited two conference books.

2--What is networking, and why it is so important in this country and every where else?
In my opinion, networking finding the an effective way to reach the right person in the right time. There thousands of Arab American engineers in this country who vary in their positions and levels from beginners (or even jobless) engineers to maybe directors or even CEOs in very big incorporations. There is always a need for communication between those engineers at different levels for different reasons (knowledge, hiring, etc.). I believe that the professional networking should be the main focus of AAAEA members. This also holds for those who live in different parts of the world as well. I have personally different examples on how professional and personal networking helped me resolve multiple issues, "People will always need each other in different ways"

3-As a president of AAEA,how do you see these organization networking efforts and accomplishments in Peoria??
Peoria chapter is not well established yet. There several things that we are working on to attract more members and that is the secret, I believe. The more members we have the more active we become.
4-What is the latest on the Peoria efforts to create a strong association? Peoria chapter, although still immature, we have organized several professional and social events over the past year and a half
5-What is needed to reach the national.
I guess we need to keep up the good work and momentum

Environmentalists concerned over Red-Dead canal plans
Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
Published Aug. 1, 2008

Environmental groups have expressed concern about plans to build a canal between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea - transferring water from the former to save the latter. They say not enough research has been done and alternative options have not been checked. 'We are concerned about what will happen to the Dead Sea when this amount of marine water is pumped into it,' said Gidon Bromberg of Friends of the Earth Middle East, at a 30 July public hearing organized by the World Bank in Herziliya, which followed two others in Ramallah and Amman.

Bromberg said it was also unclear how extracting water would affect the Red Sea, and what problems might be created by moving so much water across the desert. Some experts have pointed out that the area is known for seismic activity. The Red-Dead project would take water out of the Red Sea, desalinating some of it for use as drinking water, which would be used for Israelis, Jordanians and Palestinians. The rest of the water would go to help save the Dead Sea. Dead Sea drying up The level of the Dead Sea continues to drop at the rate of about one meter per year and has lost about a third of its volume, mainly in the last 30 years. Besides being a unique ecosystem and rich with minerals, the sea is known in Hebrew as the 'Salt Sea' for its remarkably high salt content.

Environmentalists say excessive mineral mining from the sea, and the dehydration and pollution of its natural water source, the River Jordan, have contributed to the drop. While all sides - green and corporate-types, the various governments and their citizens - agree that the Dead Sea needs to be saved, the question remains how. 'Even with the conduit, whether it goes ahead or not, the River Jordan needs to be rehabilitated,' said Nader al-Khatib, a Palestinian environmentalist from the Palestinian Water and Environmental Development Organization. He also questioned how feasible it would be to bring desalinated water from the Gulf of Aqaba to the West Bank, and whether this was the cheapest and best option to resolve the Palestinians' water crisis.

Furthermore, while hydro-electricity would be produced by the fall of water to the lowest point on earth, fossil fuels would still be burned to desalinate and distribute the water, adding to environmental concerns. In the past, ideas have been raised to desalinate Mediterranean water for the West Bank. Many environmental activists agree that the option of saving the River Jordan, water from which is also siphoned off by Syria, Israel and Jordan for drinking water, has not been explored enough.

Study to end in 2010 A World Bank official told IRIN the issues raised were being taken into consideration as part of a study set to end in 2010. However, environmental activists said the committee looking into alternatives was made up of government officials and not independents. 'We object to the [World] Bank identifying, together with the governments, a group of experts who have been picked by the water authorities,' Bromberg told IRIN after the hearing. Earlier this week, Israel's parliament launched an independent committee of inquiry into Israel's water crisis, a move welcomed by environmentalists and others.
